The HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support is a nationally accredited course that equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to assess emergency situations, provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), operate an automated external defibrillator (AED), and manage common medical emergencies until professional help arrives. This nationally recognised unit is suitable for anyone who may be required to provide an emergency response in the workplace, healthcare environments, education settings, sporting organisations, or the wider community.
 
This course combines essential life support skills with the management of common emergency conditions, ensuring participants can respond effectively and confidently when every second counts.
 
Course Overview
Throughout this course, participants will learn how to:

• Recognise and assess emergency situations
• Apply the DRSABCD action plan
• Perform high-quality CPR on adults and infants
• Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
• Manage unconscious casualties
• Respond to choking emergencies
• Recognise and respond to anaphylaxis
• Assist a casualty experiencing an asthma emergency
• Control non-life-threatening bleeding
• Manage shock
• Communicate effectively with emergency services
• Complete post-incident reporting and review procedures

 
Training is delivered in accordance with the latest Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines and nationally recognised competency requirements.

Practical Assessment Requirements
Participants must demonstrate competency in practical emergency response scenarios, including:

• At least 2 minutes of uninterrupted adult CPR performed on a manikin positioned on the floor
• At least 2 minutes of uninterrupted infant CPR
• Safe and effective use of an AED
• Management of an unconscious breathing casualty
• Response to choking, asthma, anaphylaxis, bleeding, and shock
• Participation in a simulated emergency scenario requiring assessment, treatment, communication, and reporting

Practical assessment is conducted by qualified trainers using industry-standard equipment.

Certificates are issued electronically following successful completion of all assessment requirements.
 
Entry Requirements
Participants must:

• Be aged over 18 years
• Be physically capable of performing CPR on a manikin positioned on the floor
• Have sufficient language, literacy, and numeracy skills to complete assessments
• Provide valid identification if requested
• Hold a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI)

 
Certificate Renewal
The unit itself does not have a legislated expiry date; however:

• Industry best practice recommends renewing HLTAID010 every 3 years
• CPR skills should be refreshed annually through completion of HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
