Recognise, assess and manage the deteriorating patient
The ALS1 – Advanced Life Support 1 course, delivered by HealthPro Compliance as an Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) accredited course centre, provides healthcare professionals with the knowledge and practical skills required to recognise, assess and manage the deteriorating patient during the early stages of clinical crisis. Aligned with current ANZCOR guidelines, the course focuses on early recognition of deterioration, structured assessment using the ABCDE approach, timely intervention and effective management of medical emergencies to help prevent cardiac arrest.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
What you will learn
The course covers early recognition of deterioration, ABCDE assessment, airway and resuscitation skills, teamwork, and communication in a clinical crisis.
The deteriorating patient
Recognise and assess the deteriorating patient and identify clinical deterioration early, so intervention can start before cardiac arrest.
ABCDE assessment
Apply a structured ABCDE approach to patient assessment, so the survey is consistent under pressure.
Early intervention
Initiate appropriate early interventions and escalate care when required.
Advanced life support
Apply advanced life support principles in the management of medical emergencies, aligned with current ARC guidelines.
Airway management
Develop and maintain effective airway management skills as part of the resuscitation sequence.
Cardiac arrest
Recognise and respond appropriately to cardiac arrest, and apply resuscitation principles in accordance with current ARC guidelines.
Resuscitation team
Work effectively as part of a resuscitation team, not only as a single responder.
Communication under pressure
Communicate clearly during high-pressure clinical situations, and recognise the importance of timely intervention, ongoing assessment and escalation.
Face-to-face
How it is delivered
Pre-course reading, then one full day of facilitated practical training. Completion is equivalent to 8 hours of CPD.
Pre-course reading
Complete the prescribed pre-reading before you attend. A pre-course manual is posted to you to give a correct postal address at booking so it arrives in time.
Full-day practical
One full day of facilitated face-to-face training, with practical skills development and hands-on work.
Scenarios and assessment
Scenario-based learning in realistic clinical situations, including team-based resuscitation and emergency response, then practical assessment and course completion requirements.
On-site ALS1 can be arranged for hospitals and healthcare services. HealthPro Compliance can also tailor delivery for an organisation where appropriate.

Entry requirements
- No formal prerequisite units.
- Language, literacy, numeracy and communication skills sufficient to complete the course.
- Minimum age 18 years (HealthPro Compliance enrolment rule, not a unit prerequisite).

ALS1 certificate
Participants who successfully complete the course requirements will be issued an ALS1 certificate of completion in accordance with the requirements of the ARC-accredited course.Completion is equivalent to 8 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
