LEARNING OUTCOMES

What you will learn

The unit covers scene safety, CPR, medical emergencies, injuries and how to communicate after an incident.

Scene safety

Recognise and assess an emergency, check for danger, and keep yourself, bystanders and the casualty safe before first aid starts.

Unconscious, breathing casualty

Manage an unconscious casualty who is still breathing normally, including positioning to help protect the airway.

CPR

Perform CPR on adults and infants, in line with current ARC guidelines, when a casualty is not breathing normally.

AED

Use an automated external defibrillator and follow its prompts, including delivering a shock when advised, as part of the CPR sequence.

Choking, anaphylaxis and asthma

Respond to choking, anaphylaxis and asthma, including the first aid actions and devices used for each emergency.

Bleeding and shock

Control non-life-threatening bleeding and manage shock so the casualty is supported until emergency help arrives.

Infection control

Apply standard precautions, infection prevention and control, and PPE while providing emergency care.

Communicate and review

Contact emergency services, give a clear account of the incident, and review the response afterwards.
