Tasks and hazards

Identify common manual handling tasks and the hazards that sit with them in healthcare.

Injury risk

Recognise what can make a manual task more likely to cause injury.

Risk control

Apply basic risk identification, assessment and control before and during the task.

Prepare the task

Consider the person, the task, the environment, the equipment and the help you need.

Safer movement

Use practical manual handling principles and safer movement techniques.

Extra help

Know when you need more assistance, equipment, or a different way to do the task.

Communication

Talk clearly with the person you are assisting and with the other workers involved.

Injury prevention

Use strategies that reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injury and support safer practice.

BLENDED DELIVERY

How this course runs

Online learning and the knowledge assessment come first (about 2–3 hours). Then about 2 hours face-to-face for demonstration, practice and practical assessment. Time can vary with prior knowledge and progress. The schedule leaves room for instruction, practice, feedback and the required activities.

Online learning

Self-directed online learning and a knowledge assessment, finished before you attend the practical session. Allow about 2–3 hours.

Face to face

Facilitated face-to-face training. You see the techniques, practise them, and work through realistic healthcare scenarios. About 2 hours, including the practical assessment.

Scenarios

Practical activities use healthcare scenarios, simple manual handling tools and equipment, and the chance to practise communication with the person you are assisting.

HealthPro Compliance provides the equipment, resources and conditions needed for the skills being practised and assessed. Actual time may vary with learner needs and prior knowledge.

ASSESSMENT

What you complete

You complete a knowledge assessment after the online learning and before the practical session. You then show that you can apply the manual handling principles in a simulated healthcare setting.

Knowledge

The knowledge assessment covers hazards and risks, risk management, how to prepare for a manual task, safe work practices, equipment and mechanical aids, communication, and injury prevention.

Practical

You demonstrate the principles from the course. That includes preparing for a task, using safer positioning and movement, using simple equipment, and responding to the risks you find.

Practical tasks

Help and equipment

The practical assessment is there to confirm you can apply the course in a simulated healthcare environment. It does not replace your employer’s own manual handling procedure or competency check.
